New Religion
by Nicole Dennis

In the name of our goddesses, their perfection and our diffident weakened spirit, adulterated by the grime of the media, we march to drums of a new religion, bowing down to the worship of skeletal idols hoisted above flames of our insecurity.

We sacrifice our strength for the weaknesses of an emaciated soul that desire the perfection designed by death where problems become grinded into dust that successfully bury haunts of unforgotten, troubled pasts, which will undoubtedly resurrect into sticks of insurmountable barriers against our self-worth.

We clasp our hands and close our eyes so that we won’t become distracted by the enemy that lurks within hidden curvatures of our waistline and thighs as our virgin tongues beg for forgiveness each time a taste of sweetened sorrow penetrate tightened lips that has sinned due to lack of coveted self-control.

We repent by purging failures down the toilet, rewarding ourselves with euphoric wishes of becoming as light as fairies, having the ability to defy the gravity our unwanted desires.

Flesh and bones are our symbols of righteousness as we strive to become like our goddesses of perfection that stroll down the cat-walk in a breeze of arrogance and satisfaction that can only be achieved by fasting forty days and forty nights in the wilderness of self-hatred…
forty days and forty nights in a dessert of desperation…
forty days and forty nights trapped in a distorted prism that reflect unattainable beauty…
forty days and forty nights without temptations from the enemy…

We march to the drums of a new religion;
a religion that preaches the principle of defiance from the bibles of Vogue and Cosmopolitan;
a religion that reinforces the fact that a woman shall not live by bread alone, but by an unhealthy dose of fat-free, sugar-free, significantly reduced caloric intake of indefatigable resistance against the enemy……herself.
Why?
Because without much thought, she will be prone to succumb to the lure of one of the most basic needs of survival: FOOD.

This is a new religion……sad but true.
